FIREARMS & SUICIDE PREVENTION

May, 2021

Over half of all suicides in the United States occur by handgun, with 80-90% of suicide attempts by gun being fatal. A staggering 2/3 of gun deaths in America are by suicide. There is a time-sensitive aspect to suicide by firearm, especially in youth. Young people tend to have less impulse control and can sometimes make rash, emotionally charged decisions. If a gun is nearby, the risk of suicide is much higher. Research shows that when a firearm is no longer accessible, suicide rates drop significantly. At-risk youth do not simply substitute the firearm with another lethal method. If you choose to keep firearms within the home, you must understand that it increases risk of suicide in all household members. Risk is best decreased by following the tenants of safe gun ownership.

VIOLENCE & BULLYing: IMPACT ON SUICIDAL BEHAVIOR

April, 2021

This month’s release explores how violence and bullying contribute to suicidal ideation. Sexual violence and bullying (both in-person and electronic) of high school students and the impact on suicidal behavior is explored. Of note, LGBTQ+ students had greater odd of violence victimization across all indicators and experienced higher rates across all four levels of suicidal behavior. Bullying has become dangerously widespread with 15.7% of high schools students reporting being victims of cyberbullying and 19.5% reporting being victims of in-person bullying. Sexual violence is another unacceptably prevalent crisis facing youth. Almost 11% of high school students report at least one instance of sexual violence within the last year. Amongst females the rate of sexual violence jumps to over 16%, among LGBTQ+ youth to 21.5%. Exposure to bullying as well as exposure to sexual violence, increase suicide risk.

COVID AND YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH

March, 2021

Even before COVID-19 hit the world stage, mental health disorders were so prevalent that mental illness was classified as the #1 cause of long-term disability worldwide. COVID-19 .COVID-19 only worsened the mental health epidemic, and nowhere was it more obvious than in the youth population. Of those who already struggled with metal illness, 75% saw a disintegration of their mental health as a result of COVID. One of the most alarming statistics of the youth mental health and youth suicide crises, is the statistic that 80% of youth with a diagnosable mental illness go without proper mental health treatment. This unsustainable gap in treatment for such serious illnesses no doubt played a part in how COVID was able to have such a significant negative impact on youth mental health.
